Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center provides a tuition-free, full-day prekindergarten program for four and five-year-old students in the East Hampton, Wainscott, and Sagaponack School Districts, which is also offered, as space is available, to students in other districts on a tuition basis.
Based on the New York State Common Core learning standards for prekindergarten, the prekindergarten comprehensive curriculum is designed to prepare children for kindergarten by supporting continued development of academic and social-emotional skills, using the “Big Day for PreK” curriculum published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Underpinned by research on how young children learn and grow, the daily activities for prekindergarteners include large and small-group instruction, storytime, free play and exploration at classroom learning centers, physical activity, conversation, and other learning experiences in language, math, science, and other areas. Assessment tools are used to measure student progress in all areas of learning, and support services are provided as needed.
Staffed by a New York State-certified lead teacher, and two assistants, one of whom is bilingual, each classroom maintains a child-to-teacher ratio of 9:1. All of our lead teachers have Master’s Degrees.
We work closely with the East Hampton School District to ensure that our program prepares students and families for a smooth transition to kindergarten.
